Secondary Reading/Language Arts provides students with knowledge and skills to interpret varied genres of literature, and the development of comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
Students possess divergent learning styles, i.e.,visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and learning classification, i.e., regular, special needs, gifted, that may require accommodations.The usage of accommodations may include individual education plans (IEPs); facilitative equipment, i.e., headphones, hearing aids, projection screens, projectors; personnel, i.e., tutors, scribes, sign language interpreters; adaptation of materials, i.e., enlarged print, magnification; and/or greater time frames for completion of assignments/tasks or tests. Auditory aids, i.e., cds ,tape recorders, are utilized for improved hearing/listening.
Accommodations may include:
- highlighting key words and phrases,
- graphic organizers or templates,
- semantic maps,
- storyboards,
- picture prompts,
- revised lesson formats,
- focused questioning,
- mnemonics,
- completed work samples,
- and flexible scheduling.

This is an example of showing a student what they need to complete first, then what will be next. It’s a great way to re-focus a student, show them what to expect, all without being verbal!
